RYDER CUP MADRID 2018 BID IN ST ANDREWS FOR THE 2010 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Last week the Ryder Cup Madrid 2018 bid team was at the home of golf, St Andrews, to raise awareness of the bid at The Open Championship. Members of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG) and Turismo Madrid were joined by Spanish players competing in the tournament to show their support for the bid at a time when the world of golf turns its full attention to the small Scottish town.

The likes of Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Alejandro Cañizares, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and Ignacio Garrido took time out during their practice rounds to pose with the Madrid 2018 and Spanish flags in front of the famous Royal & Ancient building next to the 18th green.

In a week that began with the Spanish national football team lifting the World Cup in South Africa, all eyes of the sporting world have been on Spain, and indeed Madrid, providing the perfect opportunity to win over more fans in Madrid’s bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

As the Open Championship celebrated its 150th anniversary, a commemorative dinner took place on the eve of the first day’s play. Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the RFEG and Angeles Alarcó, CEO of Turismo Madrid, hosted two tables at the dinner and guests of the bid team included chief golf correspondents from the Daily Mail, Sunday Telegraph, Daily Express, Daily Mirror, Irish Times, CNN and The Independent.

Ryder Cup Madrid 2018 hospitality in the famous Old Course Hotel on the first day of The Open was also well attended by key Pan-European and Spanish media. Sports Editors from the likes of The Sun, The Observer, Daily Mail and Canal + were given further insight into to the bid from Angeles Alarcó and an overview of the spectacular Tres Cantos candidate course by Robin Hiseman from European Golf Design. Bid Patron Seve Ballesteros also sent a message of support to those gathered in hospitality, including key members of the Ryder Cup Committee.

Although Seve was unable to return to the beloved course where he claimed his second Open Championship in 1984, his influence on the town and the fans remains second to none. Friday evening saw the ‘Golf Through a Lens’ photographic exhibition in aid of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation and proudly sponsored by the Ryder Cup Madrid 2018 bid.
