Research amongst UK golf fans released today reveals that Madrid is considered the sporting hub of continental Europe.
In a year which will see the Spanish region host the UEFA Champions League Final, Madrid Open Tennis and Madrid Masters Golf, more than half of respondents (54%) placed Madrid as their number one sporting destination, ahead of Lisbon (14%), Munich (12%) and Paris (12%).
Spain was also proclaimed as the preferred destination to host the 2018 Ryder Cup (37%), ahead of closest rivals Portugal (23%) and Sweden (18%), while Spanish golfing legend Seve Ballesteros was named the most popular and inspirational European golfer of all-time amongst UK golf fans.
Madrid will be competing alongside France, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and Germany in a bid to host the golfing showpiece in 2018.
