Football banter migrates from the terraces to the virtual world during the January transfer window

An explosion of Twitter activity saw close to a million tweets about the Barclays Premier League and its clubs in January. Liverpool FC, the subject of nearly a third of those tweets (301,169), were by far the most talked-about team, followed by Arsenal FC (110,901), Chelsea FC (97,655) and Manchester United FC (86,249).

Barclays, title sponsor of the Premier League, has analysed Twitter traffic to show the ever-growing influence of Twitter amongst football fans, to see which teams and which cities were the centre of the Twitter-sphere in the January transfer window.

With Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC at the centre of much of the transfer activity, with Torres, Carroll and Suarez all moving clubs, London and Liverpool were the main centres of twitter traffic, with Liverpool FC the centre of much discussion. The cities with the most active Barclays Premier League fans on Twitter were as follows:

London - 263,988 tweets

Liverpool - 124,415 tweets

Manchester - 68,733 tweets

Birmingham - 20,112 tweets

Leeds - 18,514 tweets

Of the teams discussed in those areas, Liverpool FC came out on top in all but one:

London - 1st Liverpool FC , 2nd Arsenal, 3rd Chelsea

Liverpool - 1st Liverpool FC , 2nd Everton, 3rd Chelsea

Manchester - 1st Liverpool FC , 2nd Manchester United , 3rd Manchester City

Birmingham - 1st Birmingham City , 2nd Aston Villa, 3rd Liverpool FC

Leeds -1st Liverpool FC , 2nd Arsenal, 3rd Manchester United

Having analysed tweets in January containg Barclays Premier League club names and the most popular ‘hashtags’, Barclays findings show that football banter is increasingly moving from pubs and terraces to the virtual world, as fans take advantage of being able to ‘follow’ their favourite players, clubs and journalists and debate top stories as they happen.
